Have you ever thought about all the different components that make up the phenomenon known as your life?
Have you ever even taken any time to ponder that your life is more than a one-dimensional journey of just existing?
While some experts—and perhaps your family and friends—say that ultimately you should be happy and grateful for just being alive, it’s important that you live a complete and fulfilled life. After all, that is what your epic adventure is all about, right? Well, an epic life means fulfillment in all (well, at least most) areas of your life.
Areas of Your Life
Different experts will argue about how many areas there and/or what they are. There really isn’t one set list that you have to follow.
Generally speaking, here’s what I find to be the areas of life essential to creating the epic adventure lifestyle:
- Health & Wellness
- Personal Development/Education
- Physical Environment
- Recreation & Play
- Impact on Self, Others, and the World
Ultimately, this is not the absolute list everyone has to use. You can add other areas of life to your life if you feel they are important. Everyone’s list can be and most likely will be different. The above list is what I use.
So, Which is Number One?
“Bruiser, there’s actually an area life that’s most important? Dude, I thought we could make our own list!!!”
I did say you could make your own list. Your own epic adventure is your own, including the areas of life you have. I’m also saying that some of these areas are very important and really need to be on everyone’s list. And I’ll take it one step further. One area of life trumps every other area, and there’s no way around this one.
Care to take a guess which one?
Come on, I dare you to guess.
Wait for it……..Wait for it………..
That’s right, people, your health is the most important area of your life—and it’s not even close. That being said, it might not be as obvious given the other areas of life (whether I mentioned it above or not).
I Don’t Believe You, Bruiser!!!!!
Alright then, first look at some other areas of life that people might think is most important.
Finances: Just so I don’t get a nasty e-mail about there being confusion, this area of life is about managing and growing the money you have. Earning money goes under business/career. That being said, I get this one. It is important to have enough money to make sure you can live comfortably. It is even more important to have enough money to have the freedom to live your epic adventure.
I’m guessing so many people (maybe even you) are saying, “Hey Bruiser, pump the brakes, man. Money isn’t everything”.
Well, here’s my answer to that. Make a list of all the things you have in your life that don’t cost money. Not a lot, is there? The truth is, you need money for just about everything you need (food, shelter, water, bills, etc.) and just about everything you want (going out, traveling, etc.).
Money may not be the most important thing, but it’s definitely near the top of the list.
Relationships: Again, lots of people—perhaps including a lot of the people who would say, “Money isn’t everything”—would say your family and friends is the key to your happiness. You hear it a lot.
It makes sense. I mean, we don’t want to be alone the rest of our lives, do we? Any lifestyle you live is more fun when you have other people to share it with. Whether it’s friends, family, co-workers, team members, you want strong relationships with people where you all can support each other and share your lives with.
But………………………as important as other people are to one’s life, people are capable of getting through some parts of life (if not a lot of parts of life) without other people and have lived to tell about it.
Business/Career: Unless you inherited a fortune from a dead relative or you’re a bum, chances are you earn your money through your job, career, or business—which may render this area of life more important than managing your finances.
There are two important factors in this area of life—earning the money you want and loving what you do. The goal is to have a job, career path, or business that fulfills both of these factors. The majority of people don’t have that. The effects of this include decreased happiness and lower success rate. Yeah, that would suck. There is worse, however.
Which brings us to………………….
Why Health & Wellness Over the Others?
There’s no area of life where you want to be struggling in. There is, however, a common thread to struggling in the other areas of life. Any of those areas of life that one doesn’t work on can be fixed more easily. In other words, struggling with finances, career, etc. is not necessarily detrimental to one’s life.
But what if one was to let his or her health decline and not work on that? What would happen there? One would become sick, get some sort of disease and eventually end up in the hospital and pass away. At that point, the other areas of life don’t matter anymore. So, if you are one of those people that have no idea where to improve first, health and wellness is the path you want to start with.
Starting The Process
So, you’re ready to start improving your health. How do you begin? There are so many components that go into good health—eating well, working out, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, the list goes on. There’s a lot we’re told to do.
The best thing to do when you work on your health (or any other area of life) is don’t get overwhelmed. Don’t try to do everything at once. If you have to just focus on one thing at a time. The question is which one?
The answer is easy. Becoming healthy is 80% what you put into your body. So, the best way to start is focus on good nutrition. And before you complain, no, I’m not saying to go on a diet. Diets are so restrictive, telling what you can eat and what you can’t. You should be able to eat what you want, but make sure you are making good food and drink choices.
Wrapping It All Up…………
Everyone’s life is different. We all have our priorities. However, if you don’t pay any attention to your health — whether it’s nutrition, fitness, sleep, any part of your health—the other areas of your life won’t matter. If you can only on one aspect of your health, make sure it’s your nutrition.
How will you able to spend your fortune if you’re dead or constantly sick? You don’t want to spend it on health care, so you? How will you spend time with the people you love? How will you implement your library of knowledge? How will you run you business or further your career?
Most importantly, how will you create your own epic adventure?
